Executive Director

Executive Director

CFS seeks an Executive Director with a deep well of passion who is always motivated to rally for others, whether it is their staff or the community they serve. Capable of making decisions with long-term success in mind, the Executive Director is a problem solver with child welfare or nonprofit experience who guides agency strategy, operations, fundraising, financial management, community programs, and staff leadership. Reporting directly to the Board of Directors and working closely with a dedicated leadership team, the Executive Director listens before they speak in order to avoid reacting based on emotion.

This is a multi-faceted role responsible for overseeing CFS’ many impact programs and long-range direction. The Executive Director serves as the public face of CFS, collaborates with leadership and eight direct reports to find creative solutions, and understands that sometimes tough choices must be made to better serve our community now and in the future.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable challenging the status quo and be willing to make themselves uncomfortable in order to create the growth needed to fuel our mission. At its core, this role is about guiding others and helping them tap into the best versions of themselves.

You will be the conductor of our symphony; you don’t need to know how to play each instrument, but you must understand how the orchestra is supposed to sound and be able to help make adjustments when necessary.

Qualifications: 

Education – A master’s degree in Human Services, Nonprofit Management, Public Administration, or a related field is required.

Experience – At least seven years of leadership experience in child welfare, human services, nonprofit management, or a related sector is required. Proven success in organizational leadership, fundraising, budgeting, and staff management is highly desirable, as is experience working closely with Boards of Directors and governance structures. Demonstrated success in advocacy, coalition-building, and cross-sector collaboration is preferred.

Abilities and Skills – Must possess a strong understanding of trauma-informed practices, equity principles, and community-centered service delivery. Exceptional communication, relationship building, and strategic thinking skills are also a must. Experience with CARF accreditation or similar regulatory frameworks is preferred.

Compensation & Benefits: 

This position is based in Traverse City, Michigan. The salary range for this position is $125,000 to $150,000 – commensurate with experience – and includes a competitive benefits package.

Children’s Center of Wayne County (TCC) The Children’s Center, founded in 1929, provides evidence-based clinical therapy to children who deal with mental, behavioral, emotional, intellectual, and developmental health and educational challenges or may have experienced trauma.

School + Community-Based Partnerships: We partner with K-12 schools and community organizations that serve children to provide clinical therapy, counseling, psychological services, and psychiatric evaluations, treatment & interventions.

Child Welfare: In addition to the clinical therapy programs offered, The Children’s Center places children in licensed foster homes, and supports them throughout their time in the child welfare system.

Child Well-being + Family Success: We operate an onsite family success center that promotes child-wellbeing and offers children and youth from all walks of life to access relevant mental health crisis prevention and child abuse and neglect prevention services.

Advocacy: We champion child and youth well-being for those experiencing poverty-related issues, those within the child welfare system, and those in need of evidence-based, clinical therapy.

Chief Philanthropy Officer 

Job Summary: The Chief Philanthropy Officer at The Children’s Center (TCC) is an executive leader responsible for driving the strategic direction and fundraising outcomes for the organization’s philanthropy division. The Children's Center is a leader in child well-being, clinical behavioral health, child welfare, foster care, and adoption programs. This position requires a visionary and enterprising approach that blends fundraising expertise with a profound commitment to fostering a positive workplace culture while facilitating the impact and outcomes that achieve the organization’s mission and business objectives.  Serving in this role means taking a key position in transforming lives and building a culture of excellence in children’s behavioral health, child well-being, and child welfare.  

The Chief Philanthropy Officer is entrusted with shaping a culture of high accountability within TCC’s Philanthropy department, emphasizing measurable outcomes and strategic goal alignment.  

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in nonprofit management, business administration, communications, or related field; advanced degree preferred. 

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in fundraising, development, or philanthropy, with a proven track record of success in securing major gifts, grants, and executing successful campaigns.

  • CFRE (Certified Fund-Raising Executive) preferred.

  • Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate a team to achieve fundraising goals. 

  • Advanced experience in utilizing donor relationships and communications technology.

  • Demonstrated experience in stewarding major gifts. 

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Local, State, and National Philanthropic community, pre-existing donor and foundational relationships.  

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Local State and National nonprofit philanthropy space.

  • Demonstrated experience implementing and executing on a defined fundraising methodology such as Benevon or equivalent to drive success through consistent measures and donor approaches/methods.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders. 

  • Strategic thinker with the ability to develop and execute innovative fundraising strategies that drive results. 

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across departments and functions to achieve organizational objectives.

Child Welfare Supervisor – Foster Care

Job Summary: We are looking for a great leader to provide supervision to a team of our agency’s foster care case managers, providing inclusive, strengths-based services for children and families in the child welfare system. The chosen candidate will provide leadership, training and mentorship to a team of both experienced and beginning foster care specialists. The Child Welfare Supervisor- Foster Care ensures that needed and appropriate services are provided as required by state of Michigan laws, contractual and licensing requirements and applicable service standards through the provision of high-quality direct services.

Job Requirements: The Child Welfare Supervisor must hold a master's degree from an accredited college or university in a human behavioral science and 3 years of experience as a social service worker in an agency OR a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a human behavioral science and 4 years of experience as a social service worker, 3 years of which are in an agency performing child welfare functions.

Orchards Children’s Services is one of the largest child welfare agencies in the state of Michigan, founded in 1962 by the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) Greater Detroit Section. Orchards started as a small residential group home for 7 boys with emotional impairments. Family Preservation Social Worker

As a Family Preservation Social Worker with Orchards Children’s Services, you will use leadership skills to see that research based intervention plans are developed and implemented in the family’s home or community. While providing intensive home-based services you may collaborate with Children’s Protective Services, Foster Care, and/or Probate and Circuit Courts in identifying the family’s needs, strengths, and then developing goals designed to enhance family functioning. Using respect and empathy, you’ll deliver child-centered, family-focused and strength based services directly to youth and families, many with trauma histories. While spearheading the change process, you will see that the focus is on building stronger, safer and more independent families and children. YOUR OPPORTUNITY
As a Family Preservation Social Worker with Orchards Children’s Services, you will coordinate, conduct and document assessments, screenings and child and family meetings in homes or community settings. You will use a strength-based approach to inspire family members to execute the individualized behaviorally specific safety and treatment. At times, you will use your rapport and motivation skills to empower parents fully engage with the support offered. You will meet with families around their schedules, so some days may begin when school starts, while other days may end around dinner time. You will adjust your work day and week accordingly. Participation in non-traditional working hours with the families provides you with the opportunity to provide immediate support to a child and family in crisis, in order to mitigate the long term risk of harm

Foster Care/Licensing Social Worker

As a Foster Care/Licensing Social Worker with Orchards Children’s Services, you will have the opportunity to conduct initial and ongoing assessments in regards to the needs of the family and the child in order to move toward a permanency plan in a timely manner. You will receive extensive training that will allow you to understand the needs of the program as well as become proficient in your ability to assess the needs of the child and family, address resources and develop an effective treatment plan that also addresses the petition allegations. You will also have opportunities to continue to grow within the organization through ongoing trainings as well as working as a team.

YOUR OPPORTUNITY

As a Foster Care/Licensing Social Worker, you will be very involved in the case planning and service delivery needs of the families serviced in order to move toward a permanency plan in a timely manner. You will complete initial and ongoing assessments as well as treatment plans with the families. You will also make reasonable efforts to locate resources and connect the family to those resources. You will assess and meet the needs and/or requests of foster parents in a timely and efficient manner. As a Foster Care/Licensing Social Worker, you will participate in any trainings as required by State licensing standards or as required by the Agency. You will document all case-related activities in the Michigan Statewide Automated Child Welfare System (MiSACWIS) according to the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) policy. The Foster Care/Licensing Social Worker also completes and submits all case-related documents. All reports accurately reflect activity on the case and are submitted in a timely manner. You will become proficient in the ability to complete contacts and progress notes, foster and birth home forms, court reports, replacement reports, termination summaries and any other required reports are completed as necessary. You will engage in foster and birth home visits in order to continue to assess the progress and needs of the families. This position requires effective communication skills in both written and verbal communication as information is presented to the court in written reports as well as verbal testimony and information is provided to the Orchards team as well as external sources such as parents, foster parents as well as the DHHS. You will be responding to any and all crisis situations in a calm and professional manner and demonstrate the ability to effectively meet the needs of the parties involved. You will be given the opportunity to engage in Family Team Meetings in order to address case status information as well as engage as back up for staff as needed. As a Foster Care/Licensing Social Worker, you will also be given the opportunity to demonstrate the ability to effectively prioritize and manage various tasks and appointments in a manner that allows for flexibility and timeliness.

You will be expected to establish and maintain positive, professional working relationships with external and internal customers, and maintain appropriate professional relationships with foster parents. You will be able to participate in scheduled staff meetings as well as learn additional tasks related to the role.

Foster Care Specialist

The Foster Care Specialist shall hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a human behavioral science, education or a related field.  Experience in a professional setting with youth and families strongly preferred. Strong written and oral communication skills, professionalism, organizational skills and comfort with computer technology/database entry is required.

Appropriate candidate for this position must have the ability to handle stress well, have the ability to be an active listener with good clinical observation and evaluation skills, be flexible and able to handle change, be a team player yet able to work independently, able to multi-task, and maintain case responsibility and follow-through with multiple competing demands. The Foster Care Specialist candidate should demonstrate a commitment to the safety and well-being of children and families with the primary goal of ensuring that families have the tools and services needed to achieve reunification. Knowledge of available community resource for, and comfort working with, individuals facing challenges associated with substance abuse, mental health, cognitive/developmental disabilities, domestic violence, poverty, homelessness and trauma is required.

Candidate may not have been convicted of child abuse or neglect, a felony involving harm or threatened harm to an individual within the 10 years immediately preceding the date of hire, or be listed on the central registry as a perpetrator of child abuse or child neglect. The Foster Care Specialist shall possess a valid Driver’s License, positive driving record and proof of automobile insurance.
